A hosted solution is one
where a third party provides all of the hardware, software, bandwidth,
security and other services in return for a small monthly fee. The host
provider maintains the server hardware, provides the software updates
and even secures the site from hackers or other unwanted intrusions.
Often times this is the most cost effective solution for a small or
medium sized business.
Other companies with their
own internal technology department, hardware, software and resources
might opt to host their intranet or Web site behind their own firewall.
In this case, risks of obsolescence, security and accessibility are
borne by the company’s internal staff and equipment. However, most of
the time, these risks are already being taken on by the company, so the
